Yeah!!! This goodie filled collection of my favorite baking stuff is finally here!!! Now, If you’re new to the Best of Baskets then Here is how they work!!!
For the next 5 months on the 2nd (in honor of my two congo babies) I will feature a Best of Basket of my most favorite things. ( this month, I came down with bronchitis and couldn’t make this happen by the 2nd… so it’s today!!) These are things I love myself, recommend often, or have researched to prove them the best!
All you have to do to is enter your name into a drawing for this basket when you make a donation of $5 towards our Congo Adoption. For every $5 we will put your name on the list…. so, $10 we will put your name on twice… $25 five times… and so forth. ON the 22nd (what can I say, I love the number 2!! ;) ) I will do a videotaped recording of the random choosing of the entries and will announce it on the blog and/or contact you through email or facebook. I will then pack up all the goodies and send it your way to enjoy!!!
Each month the Basket will have a different theme…. This month, it’s Baking!!!!!!
I love to bake…. and so does my husband and Kristin. Did you know my husband used to be a chef? I know I’m lucky!! And when Kristin and I were roommates, (the first time ) she used to start making cakes at midnight to take with her to work at the tea room the next morning bright and early. Our apartment always smelled so heavenly!! Normally I am pleased as punch to let them delight me with the latest cravings their having, but if I were to have my way in the Kitchen over a batch of cookies or a cake or whatever else… then this would be the collection of baking stuff that I would deem worthy of being called the best!!!
And let me tell you why!
This set of melamine bowls was probably one of my favorite most used wedding present! (thanks Robbie and Kathryn!) They are almost indestructible and are so lightweight. I HAD to include them. I have the red set… but the white is simply beautiful and will go perfectly with your kitchen. And then the measuring spoons are simply delightful, dainty and just the right feel for a day of baking. (these aren’t the ones you let your babies play with though… their porcelain!)
I keep wanting to start out by saying these are my favorite… but that’s kinda the point of all of this, they all are my favorites!!
I’m kinda embarrassed to tell you how many spatulas and spoonulas I have. I think they are so fun and are the bright colored flowers in your utensil bouquet. I fell in love with these yellow ones… so I got them for you.
I don’t know where I first saw these measuring cups…. but the moment I saw them at Pier One I grabbed them and got them for myself. I love how they brighten up my baking cabinet and decorate my counter as I’m making something. I’ve had mine for about a year… so I was kicking myself when I started planning this basket because I thought surely they were just seasonal last year. But to my delight they were brought in for this spring as well. so, I grabbed one for you too. :)
Well, I wish I could have offered you the full set of these darling anthropologie spice jars but they are on back-order until later this summer. But I have two for you. And they are perfect for salt and pepper!! these make me happy.
With the internet cookbooks aren’t really as popular as they once were but I still love them, especially once they get food stains and cookie dough smudges on the pages. My favorite cooking magazine is Cooks Illustrated. So I had to include the collection of Baking tips and recipes from Cooks Illustrated. It’s huge!! and FULL of great test kitchen tips and classic recipes for just about everything baking!!
I was at a baby shower a while back and someone gave the mommy-to-be a bag with all sorts of goodies in it. I was a little surprised to see her pull out a brightly colored knife from the bag… who gives a knife to someone at a baby shower? But the gift giver smiled and said, that knife is the best at cutting up little fruits and veggies for your kids as they start eating. So I asked her about it and she told me what brand it was and I of course ran out a got one for myself. It’s fabulous!! It’s not only sharp and perfect for all those little cutting jobs that need a serrated edge… it’s bright so you always can find it in a hurry. :) So…. I had to include it in this basket. (I think kuhn rikon has some amazing colorful knives… and I kinda want one of everything they make. I really love this one: Watermelon Knife)
Aprons have to be the cutest things ever!!! And when I saw this Apron I had to get it for this basket. It’s so darling and so bright and colorful, you HAVE to have it. And being a bigger gal myself, I get so miffed when I see cute aprons that only fit barbie sized women… this one isn’t like that. It fits me great and will adjust to fit whatever size and shape you are!!! :)
From timing biscuits to time out for kids to setting a timed goal for yourself…. this vintage timer is perfect for those things and is useful for all sorts of things throughout the day. So, I’m including this cute green one.
For years I’ve been a william-sonoma kitchen towel user, and still am for practical uses. BUT I recently discovered these kitchen towels from world market. They are affordable as well as adorable. They come in all sorts of prints and patterns and are thin enough to really be able to fill up your towel drawer with a lot of them. And if you’re like me kitchen towels aren’t just kitchen towels, they are hot pads… warm bread wrappers…backgrounds to great foodie pics… all sorts of things! I couldn’t just pick one pattern that I liked best… so I got you 3!
Growing up in Texas there are just a few things that aren’t up for questioning if they are the best or not. Bluebell Ice Cream. Coca-cola. Brisket. and Adam’s Vanilla. Dan used to make so much fun of me after we got married because he knew when it came to vanilla I was obsessed with Adam’s Vanilla. no other brand would do. Mom would ship it to me in containers in college and it was so nice to have the smell of home whenever I would use it. (you can warm some up in a pot with water and let it simmer before guests come over and your whole house will smell like fresh baked cookies!!)
This might seem a little random. Nutmeg? Well, I’m a little nuts over nutmeg and use it in everything!! Cookies, muffins, pies, cream sauces, fruit, yogurt, eggs, you name it…. But you can’t use nutmeg that comes in a jar, it has to be the freshly grated kind to get the full flavor that goes with anything!! So, I’m including a bunch of whole nutmegs and a grater for you. You will thank me!!!
Yep…. another Cookbook. This one is one that you will pass on to your kids when they get older. This will have the whole wheat bread recipe that you fall in love with. This will kinda make you want to move to a simpler time in history. I LOVE church cookbooks and this cookbook reminds me of those. It’s written by a homeschooling mom who has made eating more natural a goal and also has a high value on cultivating a home with closeness. It even has a section in the back with thoughts and ideas about each month of the year.
Okay, forgive my ugly oven… but this is a must have but yet so few of us have one. I think we’d be surprised how many ovens cook at different temps than what we think we are cooking at. Well, with this little guy you never have to wonder.
This cake tester might seem little and insignificant, but I’m in love with this little guy. I always hated using a butter knife to test brownies… and never had toothpicks when I needed them. Then My mother-in-love gave me this guy…. and I don’t know how I ever lived without it. It’s perfect and it’s designed in a way to be tiny but yet with the plastic head I can always find it easily. So… I had to include it. (but forgot to grab a cute pic of it… so here’s the stock photo of it!!)
And lastly, I’ve always been a fan of parchment paper… but when martha came out with this stuff I just swooned. Foil + Parchment Paper = Genius. So, I’m including a roll.
So, How’s that for a Best of Basket?? I hope this inspires you to 1. go bake something today, 2. give to this basket and 3. tell your friends about it.
Several friends asked me last month about just giving to the adoption apart from the basket. Which is fine. But I do want all of you to know that I don’t think any of you who do give towards the basket are doing so just so you can get the goodies. I know you all are excited and understand that you’re a part of something much bigger than these baskets. So, if you’re wanting to give separately, that’s fine. But know that I want you to have these baskets. I’m SO excited to recommend these products and I do so all the time to people… so this is just a fun project for me to actually be able to feature all this and be able to give you a chance to get them as well.
So…. give to the baskets. It’s for all of our joy!!!
